Frequently Asked Questions

The Project

What is the Welsh Video Network (WVN)?

The Welsh Video Network was established to distribute and support videoconferencing studios and other video facilities to all Further and Higher Education Institutions throughout Wales. The videoconferencing equipment being supplied is capable of operating via the H.320 (ISDN) and H.323 (IP) networks. Detailed background information is available at: http://www.wvn.ac.uk/background.htm

        How is the WVN funded?

The project is funded by the Education and Learning Wales ELWa and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales HEFCW. The project also received £2.4M additional financial support from the European Regional Development Fund, for institutions within the Objective One area.

        Who manages the WVN project?

The United Kingdom Education and Research Networking Association (UKERNA) is managing the WVN project on behalf of the Welsh Funding Councils.

Which institutions have had videoconferencing studios?

All Further and Higher Education Institutions in Wales have received at least one studio. A summary of the final allocation of studios (1 March, 2001) is available to WVN members at: http://www.wvn.ac.uk/forum/finalallocation.htm

Why have some institutions got more studios than others?

The original report that led to the development of the project identified differing needs according to the size of the institution in student numbers, the number of sites at each institution, and the distances between those sites. Sites within the European Regional Development Fund Objective One area have been able to benefit from this assistance to purchase further studios.

How will studios and institutions be supported?

The Welsh Video Network Support Centre, based at the University of Wales Swansea and the University of Wales Aberystwyth, provides all support, including studio commissioning, networking and fault management, for the duration of the project.
