The History of Numbers

by Sofya Lyakhova, Area Coordinator, Further Maths Support Programme

SESSIONS BOOKABLE ON DEMAND BY INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS

(This session can be delivered to individual schools by request. A minimum of two weeks' notice is required)

Students will be shown when and where numbers were created (or discovered!).

We will trace the steps of famous mathematicians and see how the concept of a number changed throughout history.

We will see why division by zero is impossible.

Finally we will try to solve a simple-looking cubic equation and will discover a new kind of number called imaginary.

Students will be asked to do some exercises during the session. Students must be accompanied by their teacher.

The session is open to Year 10 or Year 11 (top set) pupils
